Getting started

How to use Autism Agent

Two roles: the person who communicates (Speak mode) and the caregiver who manages cards (Admin). Here's how both work.

For the person communicating

The Speak screen is calm and distraction-free. No account needed — just tap and hear words.

  1. Tap a picture to speak

Each card shows a photo or pictogram with a spoken label. One tap speaks it instantly — great for single words like Yes, No, More, or Help.

  2. Build a sentence

Switch to sentence mode to combine words: I → want → juice. Each tap adds to the message bar. Tap Speak when the full sentence is ready.

  3. Type custom words

Open the keyboard to spell words not on the board. Typed words appear in the sentence bar and can be spoken too.

  4. Use categories

Filter cards by sector: People, Places, Food, Feelings, and more. Core words stay pinned for quick access.

For caregivers

Admin is hidden on purpose so the communication board stays safe and focused.

  1. Open Admin

Long-press the gear icon on the Speak screen (a normal tap won't open it). Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode.

  2. Add cards with real photos

Tap + to add a card. Choose a photo from your library, write the spoken label, and pick a category. Real pictures of family, food, and routines work best.

  3. Organize categories

Create or edit categories to match your child's world — school, therapists, favorite foods, daily routines.

  4. Adjust voice and display

In Control Panel, set voice, speech rate, pitch, grid size, and student-safe mode. Test the greeting before handing the device back.

First-time setup

  • Install Autism Agent from the App Store
  • Complete the quick agent setup (name + avatar)
  • Starter cards load automatically — 128 common words with pictograms
  • Swap in your own photos anytime from Admin
  • Enable student-safe mode for a calmer, focused board

Device roles

Manages cards — parent's phone. You add, edit, and share cards.

Viewer only — child's phone. Shows shared cards read-only; Admin is hidden.

Set this in Control Panel → Device Role.

Sharing with family (Autism Agent Plus)

With Plus ($1.99/month), a caregiver can sync cards across devices and share the library read-only with a family member's Apple ID — even on a separate account.

  1. Subscribe to Plus

Control Panel → Autism Agent Plus. Restart the app after subscribing to enable iCloud sync.

  2. Share from Admin

On the caregiver device, open Admin → tap the share button → invite your family member's Apple ID.

  3. Accept on the child's device

Install the app on their phone, choose Viewer only at setup, and accept the share link. Cards appear read-only.

  4. New cards sync automatically

When you add cards on your phone, they appear on the viewer device. No re-sharing needed.
